Many years ago, when I got into 30 Rock, I started writing comedy sketches. Maybe I should put that in quotes… “comedy”… humour value may actually vary. I never did anything with them, but they were fun.
The Detectives actually predated all of this by a few years. I was taking a screenwriting course through Gotham Writing Classes and we had to rewrite a scene from our script in another genre. I chose “British Comedy” (I guess you could say I filtered it through Monty Python), though it would be a few years before I’d actually really start spending time with BBC material proper. Still makes for a fun, absurd read though.
The Wedding Sketch was borne out of my experiences attending a lot of weddings where I kept hearing the same speeches over and over again. My apologies if you’ve ever delivered one.
The Political Subtext Sketch… well, that one practically wrote itself. And the Fresh Zombie sketch? That one was sparked by frequent arguments over expiration dates…
