Star Wars Drawing Month – Day 20 – Leia, Tarkin, Vader
So I’ve wrapped up my fifth piece, taken from Star Wars: A New Hope, from just before Tarkin ordered the destruction of Alderaan. It’s taken from a still, but I’ve added some a few small flourishes to make it a little bit more its own piece.
I knew I wanted something with people in it, that’d force me to practice specific people. Yoda was a challenge, but he’s not human. Human beings are a different beast to capture. And there were three of them in once scene. They had to look like they were all in the scene together, and not cobbled out of three different drawings.
All in all, a pretty satisfying piece to work on.
The colours really pull the piece together. The reds reflecting off the console in the back, shining off Vader’s armour, Tarkin and Leia’s face, hair and clothes. It really made all three characters feel like they were inhabiting the same set.
I wasn’t originally going to have the blurry guy in the background. I thought it would complicate the image too much. But, as it turns out, just a quick sketch throwing it in changed my mind. I didn’t even bother drawing him properly either. Something about him and his console being so insanely out of focus and un-detailed contrasted really sharply with Vader in the foreground and made him look even sharper. I tidied the console up a bit, and added some blue to push it into the background a little more, but it’s mostly the same sloppy mess I threw in there just to see if it’d work.
